JOHN TRUMBULL - INSCRIBED ENGRAVING SIGNED CIRCA 1810?JOHN TRUMBULL. Printed Engraving inscribed and signed: "Hon. R. Ricker/from Jno Trumbull". B/w, 9¾x13¾ overall, image 6½x8¼ (one surface). JOHN TRUMBULL, a painter, architect and author, was one of the foremost painters of the major figures and episodes of the Revolutionary War period. After studying architecture in France, Trumbull went to London, where he studied painting under the tutelage of Benjamin West, who encouraged him to begin a series of historical paintings and engravings. RICHARD RIKER was the Recorder of New York City. This engraving is of ZEPHANIAH PLATT, a member of the Continental Congress and Judge of New York's Circuit Court for many years. He founded the town of Plattsburg and was one of the originators of the Erie Canal. Reproduced images by artists that are also signed by them from this period are rare. ½-inch diagonal hole at upper left portion of background. Blank border is tanned and shaded from prior framing. Pinholes at left border. Repairs filled with a white substance in 4 places to left of signature and in some areas of upper blank border. None detract from the overall fine appearance.
